Chromium(III) Electrolyte – Ready-to-Use Chromium Plating Solution for Tank, Pen & Brush Plating

Professional Chromium(III) Electrolyte for Bright, Hard and Corrosion-Resistant Chromium Coatings

The Chromium(III) Electrolyte from Betzmann Galvanik is a premium, ready-to-use electroplating solution developed for depositing decorative and technical chromium coatings. Based on modern trivalent chromium (Chromium III) technology, it provides a significantly safer and more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional hexavalent chromium (Chromium VI) plating while producing brilliant, highly reflective chromium finishes.

Using advanced electrolyte technology, this solution produces bright, uniform, and highly adherent chromium coatings with excellent hardness and corrosion resistance. Current densities of up to 50 A/dm² are possible, making it suitable for a wide range of decorative and industrial applications.

The electrolyte is suitable for tank plating, pen plating, and brush plating, providing professional results for repairs, restoration, prototypes, and production work.

Brilliant Decorative and Functional Chromium Coatings

Chromium is one of the most popular decorative electroplating finishes. Chromium coatings provide:

  • Brilliant mirror finish

  • High reflectivity

  • Extremely hard surface

  • Outstanding wear resistance

  • Excellent corrosion resistance

  • Excellent oxidation resistance

Chromium is normally deposited using the proven plating sequence:

Copper → Nickel → Chromium

The nickel layer acts as a corrosion-resistant intermediate layer and diffusion barrier, while the chromium topcoat provides the characteristic bright chrome appearance.

Typical decorative chromium thickness ranges from 0.2 to 0.5 µm.

Suitable Base Materials

The Chromium(III) Electrolyte is ideal for plating previously metallised surfaces including:

  • Nickel

  • Copper

  • Brass

  • Bronze

  • Steel

  • Stainless steel (after suitable pretreatment)

  • Silver

  • Gold

For optimum results, a bright nickel undercoat is highly recommended.

Application

Before chromium plating, all workpieces must be thoroughly cleaned, degreased, and activated.

The electrolyte operates efficiently at room temperature, eliminating the need for energy-intensive heating.

For optimum coating quality, adjust voltage, electrode distance, and plating time according to the size and geometry of the workpiece.

Recommended Anodes

For tank plating:

  • Aluminium

  • Platinized Titanium

  • Platinum

  • Iridium

For pen and brush plating:

  • Graphite Electrodes

  • Nickel Electrodes

  • Stainless Steel Electrodes

Tip: Aluminium anodes provide excellent value and help maintain the bright, attractive chromium colour.
