Product information "Yellow Chromate Conversion Coating – Chromium(III) Yellow Passivation for Zinc & Zinc-Plated Parts"

Yellow Chromating / Yellow Passivation for Zinc – Golden Finish and Corrosion Protection

Golden Yellow Passivation for Zinc-Plated Surfaces

With Yellow Passivation from Betzmann Galvanik, you can give zinc-plated components an attractive yellow to golden-yellow finish with iridescent colour effects. This electroless immersion treatment creates a decorative passivation layer with an appearance similar to traditional yellow chromating.

The solution is suitable for the post-treatment of existing zinc coatings, including electroplated zinc surfaces. It can also be used to colour previously blue-passivated zinc components yellow, such as commercially available screws and fasteners.

Key Benefits

  • Golden-yellow finish: Achieve shades ranging from pale yellow to golden yellow.

  • Iridescent appearance: Decorative colour effects similar to traditional yellow chromating.

  • Corrosion protection: Helps protect zinc coatings against oxidation and white rust.

  • For zinc-plated components: Suitable for the post-treatment of existing zinc layers.

  • Ideal for restoration work: Suitable for screws, nuts, fasteners, fittings and technical components.

  • Easy application: Simple immersion process without a power supply or additional electroplating equipment.

  • Chromium(VI)-free: An alternative to traditional chromium(VI)-based yellow chromating, based on chromium(III).

Applications

Yellow Passivation is particularly suitable for:

  • Classic car restoration and automotive applications

  • Screws, nuts, washers and fasteners

  • Model making and technical components

  • Electroplated zinc surfaces

  • Decorative metal finishing and workshop applications

Instructions for Use

1. Clean and degrease the surface

The zinc-plated surface must be clean and free from grease. If necessary, use a suitable electroplating degreaser. Briefly rinse the component with water afterwards.

2. Immerse the component

Pour the Yellow Passivation solution into a suitable container and immerse the zinc-plated component completely.

3. Monitor the colour development

The typical immersion time is approximately 30 seconds to 5 minutes. The resulting colour depends on the condition of the zinc coating, the temperature and the immersion time. Check the component regularly and remove it from the bath once the desired colour has been achieved.

4. Rinse thoroughly

Rinse the treated component thoroughly with water. If required, the treatment can be repeated to intensify the colour.

Important Information

Yellow Passivation is designed to post-treat existing zinc coatings and help protect them against oxidation and white rust. It does not reliably remove existing oxidation layers, so thorough cleaning and preparation are essential.

During treatment, some of the zinc coating is attacked or dissolved. The zinc layer should therefore be sufficiently thick; a minimum thickness of 2 µm is recommended as a guideline. Particular care is required when treating components with thin electroplated zinc coatings.

The final colour depends on the surface condition and process parameters. Identical colour results cannot be guaranteed for every component.

Safety information: The product contains 3% hydrochloric acid. It may cause skin irritation, serious eye irritation and respiratory tract irritation. Wear suitable protective gloves and safety goggles. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Keep locked away and out of reach of children.

Blue Chromate Conversion Coating – Chromium(III) Blue Passivation for Zinc & Zinc-Plated Parts

Blue Chromating / Blue Passivation for Zinc – Corrosion Protection and Decorative FinishProtect and enhance the appearance of zinc-plated surfacesThis Blue Chromating Solution for zinc surfaces is designed for the post-treatment of electroplated zinc coatings. It helps protect zinc surfaces against premature oxidation and tarnishing while improving their decorative appearance. Depending on the immersion time, the treatment can produce a glossy, bluish-iridescent or increasingly matte finish.Blue passivation is particularly suitable for components that have been electroplated with zinc. It helps reduce the tendency of zinc surfaces to tarnish and provides a more uniform, attractive finish.Another advantage is its ability to reduce or remove slight yellowish discoloration that may occur after zinc plating due to certain brightening additives, provided the surface and process are suitable. The treatment is carried out without an external electrical current at room temperature. No electroplating power supply or additional heating is required.Key BenefitsBlue chromating and blue passivation for suitable zinc surfacesPost-treatment for electroplated zinc coatingsHelps protect against zinc oxidation and premature tarnishingCreates an attractive bluish-iridescent finishCan reduce slight yellowish discoloration after zinc platingAdjustable surface appearance through different immersion timesElectroless application without an external power supplySuitable for room-temperature processingGlossy to matte finishes, depending on treatment durationDesigned for decorative post-treatment of suitable metal surfacesApplicationsBlue chromating is primarily used for the post-treatment of electroplated zinc components, including:Screws, nuts and fastenersSteel components with electroplated zinc coatingsMetal fittings and small componentsZinc-plated parts requiring an improved decorative finishZinc-plated components with slight yellowish discoloration caused by brightening additivesChromating and passivation processes are also used for certain aluminium surfaces. The following times are guidelines and may vary depending on the condition of the zinc coating, temperature and plating process.Immersion timeTypical effect5–15 secondsYellowish discoloration caused by brightening additives may disappear15–45 secondsGlossy, bluish-iridescent surface45–120 secondsIncreasingly matte finish; corrosion protection may increaseFor a glossier result, a shorter immersion time is recommended. If a more matte appearance is desired, the immersion time can be increased gradually.Inspect the surface regularly and adjust the treatment time to achieve the desired finish. How to Use Blue Chromating Solution1. Prepare the workpieceThe workpiece should be freshly zinc-plated, clean and free from grease, dirt and residues. Appropriate surface preparation is essential for achieving a uniform result.2. Treat the workpiece promptly after zinc platingThe blue chromating treatment should be carried out as soon as possible after zinc plating. If too much time passes, a passivation or oxide layer may form on the zinc surface, potentially interfering with or preventing uniform treatment.3. Immerse the workpiecePour the solution into a suitable, chemically resistant container. Fully immerse the zinc-plated workpiece for the desired period. The recommended immersion time is 15 seconds to 2 minutes.4. Monitor the surfaceObserve the colour development during treatment. A short immersion may reduce yellowish discoloration, while a somewhat longer treatment can produce a bluish-iridescent finish. Longer immersion times generally result in a progressively more matte appearance.5. Post-treatmentRemove the workpiece once the desired result has been achieved and continue with the post-treatment specified by the manufacturer. In particular, follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding rinsing and drying.Important: The Zinc Coating Is Partially AttackedBlue chromating partially removes the existing zinc coating. According to the supplied product information, the zinc loss may reach up to 2 µm after an immersion time of four minutes.Avoid excessive treatment times, particularly when working with thin zinc coatings or components with tight dimensional tolerances. Follow the recommended treatment times and inspect the surface regularly. The achievable protective effect depends on the quality and thickness of the original zinc coating, surface preparation and actual process conditions. Blue chromating cannot reliably remove existing oxidation or corrosion damage.Electroless Processing at Room TemperatureThe treatment requires no external electrical current. At an operating temperature of approximately 20–30 °C, additional heating is normally unnecessary. This makes the process straightforward and convenient, particularly for post-treating small and medium-sized zinc-plated components.Blue Chromating / Blue Passivation from Betzmann GalvanikGive electroplated zinc components an attractive finish while helping protect the zinc surface against premature tarnishing. By adjusting the immersion time, the surface appearance can be influenced from glossy and bluish-iridescent to matte.Betzmann Galvanik – products for electroplating, post-treatment and professional surface finishing.
