Acid Copper – Bright Copper Electrolyte BMG-095.1
Acid bright copper electrolyte for high-gloss copper electroplating
Short Description
The Acid Bright Copper Electrolyte BMG-095.1 is a high-quality electroplating solution designed for electroplating copper onto metal surfaces.
It is suitable for tank plating as well as brush / pen plating and produces very smooth, bright and uniform copper coatings with excellent electrical conductivity and mechanical properties.
This acidic copper electrolyte is more powerful than alkaline copper systems and is used whenever high surface quality, strong adhesion and excellent brightness are required.
What is this electrolyte used for?
The acid bright copper electrolyte is used for electroplating conductive metals in order to:
-
provide corrosion protection
-
create decorative, high-gloss copper surfaces
-
serve as an intermediate layer for further coatings (nickel, silver, gold, chromium)
-
improve electrical and thermal conductivity
-
build complex multilayer systems such as copper → nickel → chromium or copper → nickel → gold
How does copper electroplating work? (simple explanation)
In electroplating, copper is deposited onto a workpiece using direct electrical current:
-
The workpiece is thoroughly cleaned and degreased
-
It is connected as the cathode (negative pole)
-
A suitable anode (copper or graphite) is connected as the positive pole
-
When current is applied, copper ions migrate from the electrolyte and form a copper layer on the surface
The result is a smooth, bright and conductive copper coating.
Advantages of the Acid Bright Copper Electrolyte
-
Produces high-gloss, uniform copper coatings
-
Excellent electrical conductivity
-
Suitable for tank plating and brush / pen plating
-
Ideal as a base layer for nickel and decorative metal coatings
-
Good polishability, reducing post-polishing effort
-
Reliable performance when operated within recommended parameters
Technical Parameters
The following values represent typical operating parameters for acid bright copper electrolytes:
| Property | Value / Range |
|---|---|
| Electrolyte type | Acid bright copper electrolyte |
| pH value | approx. 1 |
| Operating temperature | 15–50 °C |
| Voltage (tank plating) | 0.5–2.5 V (recommended ~1–1.5 V at 10 cm electrode distance) |
| Voltage (brush / pen plating) | 1.2–4.5 V (recommended ~3 V) |
| Current density | 0.6–5 A/dm² (up to ~7 A/dm² with agitation) |
| Deposition rate | approx. 1 µm/min at 5 A/dm² and 20 °C |
| Anode material | Copper or graphite |
| Suitable substrates | Copper, brass, stainless steel, acid-resistant metals |
| Not suitable without pretreatment | Aluminum, chromium, zinc, tin, titanium |
Important:
Acid-sensitive metals such as steel, iron or zinc must first be pre-plated with an alkaline copper electrolyte before using this acid copper system.
Practical Application Notes
Surface preparation:
-
Thorough degreasing and cleaning are essential
-
No grease, fingerprints or residues should remain on the surface
Tank plating:
-
Maintain recommended voltage and current density
-
Keep appropriate distance between anode and cathode
Brush / pen plating:
-
Keep the plating pad in constant motion for uniform deposition
Temperature:
-
Can be used at room temperature or heated up to 50 °C for improved deposition behavior
