Aluminium Activator – Pretreatment for Electroplating Aluminium Surfaces

Product information "Aluminium Activator – Pretreatment for Electroplating Aluminium Surfaces"

Aluminium Activator / Aluminium Pretreatment – Preparation for Electroplating Aluminium Surfaces

Professional Aluminium Pretreatment for Galvanic Coating of Aluminium

The Aluminium Activator from Betzmann Galvanik has been specially developed to prepare aluminium surfaces for subsequent electroplating processes.

Because aluminium forms a natural oxide layer on its surface, direct electroplating is difficult. This pretreatment first creates a firmly adhering zinc layer on the aluminium surface. This zinc layer then serves as a base for further electroplating processes, for example with an alkaline copper electrolyte.

The optimized low-viscosity formulation offers significant advantages compared to conventional aluminium activators and enables reliable processing even on complex aluminium components.

Your Advantages

  • Specially developed for the electroplating pretreatment of aluminium

  • Creates an adherent zinc layer on aluminium

  • Enables subsequent electroplating processes

  • Ideal preparation for alkaline copper electrolytes

  • Reduced viscosity for improved application properties

  • Lower chemical losses

  • Less solution entrapment in porous aluminium castings

  • Faster zinc deposition

  • Improved process safety on aluminium alloys

  • Suitable for demanding aluminium components

Why Activate Aluminium Before Electroplating?

Aluminium quickly forms a stable oxide layer on its surface. This oxide layer prevents direct and permanent electroplating.

The aluminium activation process:

  • Removes the oxide layer

  • Deposits a thin zinc layer

  • Creates an adhesive surface for further coatings

After this pretreatment, aluminium can be reliably coated with additional electroplated layers.

Typical coating system:

Aluminium → Aluminium Activator (Zinc Layer) → Alkaline Copper → Nickel → Gold / Chromium / Precious Metals

Typical Applications

Suitable for:

  • Aluminium components

  • Aluminium alloys

  • Aluminium castings

  • Machine components

  • Automotive parts

  • Model making

  • Restoration work

  • Technical coatings

  • Decorative surface finishing

Especially suitable for aluminium alloys containing:

  • Magnesium

  • Silicon

Advantages of the Low-Viscosity Formulation

The specially developed low viscosity provides important advantages:

Reduced Solution Entrapment in Porous Cast Structures

With conventional, higher-viscosity solutions, the chemical may penetrate into pores and capillaries of aluminium cast parts. This can later cause problems such as blistering or defects in subsequent coatings.

The low-viscosity formulation significantly reduces this effect.

Lower Chemical Consumption

Improved wetting and reduced solution carry-over result in lower chemical losses, especially with:

  • Complex component geometries

  • Porous cast surfaces

  • Difficult workpiece shapes

Faster Deposition

The optimized composition enables efficient and uniform zinc deposition on aluminium surfaces.

Application Instructions

Before activation, the aluminium surface must be thoroughly cleaned and degreased.

For optimum results:

  • Completely remove grease and contamination

  • Remove oxide layers

  • Do not touch the cleaned surface with bare hands

  • Continue with the next plating step immediately after activation

After zinc activation of the aluminium surface, further coating is preferably carried out with an alkaline copper electrolyte.

Technical Properties

  • Process: Aluminium zinc pretreatment

  • Purpose: Creation of a galvanically suitable zinc intermediate layer

  • Subsequent layer: Alkaline copper

  • Suitable for aluminium and aluminium alloys
