Nickel-Strike Stainless Steel Pretreatment – Adhesion Nickel for Electroplating

Product information "Nickel-Strike Stainless Steel Pretreatment – Adhesion Nickel for Electroplating"

Nickel-Strike – Adhesion Layer for Stainless Steel and Difficult-to-Plate Metals

Professional Pretreatment for Electroplating Stainless Steel and High-Alloy Steels

The Nickel-Strike Electrolyte from Betzmann Galvanik has been specially developed to make stainless steel, high-alloy steels and difficult-to-plate metals suitable for electroplating.

Nickel-Strike, also known as strike nickel or nickel strike plating, has been used in electroplating technology since the end of the 19th century and is now an essential process step for professional surface finishing.

The oxide layers present on stainless steel and high-alloy materials often prevent reliable adhesion of subsequent galvanic or chemical coatings. Nickel-Strike activates the oxide layer and simultaneously creates a thin, strongly adhering nickel layer.

This micro-thin nickel layer forms the ideal base for further coatings such as:

  • Copper

  • Nickel

  • Gold

  • Silver

  • Palladium

  • Rhodium

  • Chromium

Suitable for:

  • Tank plating

  • Pen plating

  • Brush / tampon plating

  • Electroless coating processes

Your Advantages

  • Makes stainless steel and high-alloy steels suitable for electroplating

  • Excellent adhesion promoter for further coatings

  • Removes interfering oxide layers

  • Dissolves chromium oxides on stainless steel surfaces

  • Creates a strongly adhering nickel layer

  • Suitable for galvanic and electroless processes

  • Ideal for tank and pen plating

  • Suitable for stainless steel, nickel and special alloys

  • Professional quality from Betzmann Galvanik

How Nickel-Strike Works

Stainless steel and high-alloy steels have a very stable passive layer consisting mainly of chromium oxides. This layer normally prevents reliable electroplating.

Nickel-Strike provides:

  1. Activation of the metal surface

  2. Removal of interfering oxide layers

  3. Dissolution of chromium compounds on the surface

  4. Deposition of a thin nickel layer

This newly deposited nickel layer ensures excellent adhesion for further coatings.

The ideal coating system:

Stainless Steel → Nickel-Strike → Copper or Nickel → Gold / Silver / Palladium / Rhodium / Chromium

Typical Applications

Nickel-Strike is used for:

  • Stainless steel

  • High-alloy steels

  • Nickel

  • Nickel alloys

  • Passivated nickel surfaces

  • Special metals

Especially suitable for alloys containing:

  • Silicon

  • Magnesium

  • Manganese

  • Lead

  • Tungsten

  • Titanium

Reactivation of Passivated Nickel Surfaces

Already nickel-plated components can develop a passive surface after prolonged exposure to air.

These so-called passivated nickel layers lose their original adhesion properties for further coatings.

Treatment with Nickel-Strike reactivates the surface and enables reliable further plating.

Application Instructions

Before every treatment:

  • Completely remove grease and oils

  • Clean the workpiece thoroughly

  • Remove rust and contamination

  • Handle the workpiece only with clean disposable gloves

Skin oils can significantly reduce the adhesion of the subsequent coating.

After Nickel-Strike treatment, the workpiece should be further processed within 10–30 minutes to prevent renewed oxidation.
