The specified voltage ranges are guidelines for the respective plating methods. Suitable operating values depend on the equipment, electrode arrangement, contact area and actual working conditions.

Current Density and Current

Current density describes the amount of electrical current flowing per unit of effective plated surface area. It is expressed in amperes per square centimetre (A/cm²) and is an important parameter in electroplating.

Current density is calculated by dividing the current by the effective surface area:

Current density = Current ÷ Effective surface area

Example: A current of 0.5 A applied to an effective surface area of 50 cm² corresponds to a current density of 0.01 A/cm².

This is a calculation example only and is not a confirmed operating recommendation for this gold electrolyte.

For this specific 2 g/L gold bath, the appropriate current density must be determined from the manufacturer's technical specifications and the plating method being used. Values specified for a different gold electrolyte should not be adopted without verification.

With pen plating and brush plating, the effective contact area also depends on the size of the plating head or the wetted tampon. Consequently, current density can be more difficult to determine than in conventional tank plating.

Application for Pen Plating

Pen plating allows individual spots, small areas and selected sections of a workpiece to be gold plated without immersing the entire component in a plating bath.

The electrolyte is transferred to the prepared surface using a suitable plating pen or plating head. This method is particularly suitable for localised gold plating, repairs and replating.

Typical Applications

  • Repair plating

  • Replating

  • Individual surfaces and sections

  • Edges and detailed areas

  • Jewellery and jewellery components

  • Watches and watch components

  • Electrical contacts

  • Decorative selective gold plating

  • Compatible technical components

Specified voltage range: 3.0–6.0 V

The appropriate setting depends on the pen plating equipment and the application. In addition to voltage, the actual current, effective contact area and consistent wetting are important factors affecting the coating result.

Application for Brush Plating

Brush plating is suitable for localised gold plating, larger sections and areas that cannot easily be coated by immersion in a tank.

In this process, a suitable tampon is wetted with the gold electrolyte and moved across the prepared surface. The electrolyte is applied locally to the area being plated.

Typical Applications

  • Larger surface sections

  • Repair areas

  • Replating

  • Jewellery and decorative components

  • Technical components

  • Hard-to-reach surface areas

  • Workpieces that should not be fully immersed

Specified voltage range: 3.0–6.0 V

Application Instructions

1. Prepare the surface

Thoroughly clean and degrease the workpiece. Depending on the base material and coating system, suitable activation or an intermediate layer may be required.

2. Prepare the electrode and tampon

Use a graphite, platinum or titanium electrode suitable for the electrolyte and the plating system. Wet the tampon with the electrolyte in accordance with the equipment manufacturer's instructions.

3. Check the electrical connections

In conventional metal electrodeposition, the workpiece is connected as the cathode to the negative terminal. The working electrode is connected to the positive terminal as required by the system. Check the connection instructions for the equipment before use.

4. Set the voltage

The specified voltage range is 3.0–6.0 V. The actual current depends on factors such as the contact area, tampon, applied pressure and electrical resistance. The equipment manufacturer's operating specifications must be followed.

5. Apply the gold coating

Move the wetted tampon evenly over the prepared surface. Maintain consistent movement, adequate wetting and stable contact.

6. Inspect the result

Check the plated surface for uniformity and adhesion. The achievable coating thickness depends on the operating conditions, surface preparation and plating time.

Tank plating reference values cannot automatically be transferred to brush plating without verification.

Application for Tank Plating

This gold electrolyte is also intended for conventional tank plating, also known as immersion electroplating.

In this process, the workpiece is immersed fully or partially in the gold bath. The surface to be plated is connected as the cathode, while the suitable anode is connected according to the plating system being used.

Specified voltage range: 2.0–4.0 V

The appropriate operating voltage depends on the equipment, electrode arrangement, effective surface area and electrical resistance.

Typical Applications

  • Goldsmithing

  • Repair and restoration

  • Replating

  • Decorative metal surfaces

  • Selective gold plating

  • Technical components

  • Electrical contacts

  • Jewellery and watches

  • Compatible metal workpieces

A suitable electrode arrangement and an even current distribution help achieve a more uniform coating.

Suitable Base Materials and Undercoatings

Proper workpiece preparation is essential for a high-quality gold coating. The surface must be clean, free from grease and suitable for the electroplating process.

Depending on the material, suitable substrates may include:

  • Silver

  • Copper

  • Brass

  • Bronze

  • Nickel

  • Nickel-containing alloys

  • Other suitable electroplatable metals

Depending on the substrate, application and requirements for adhesion and corrosion resistance, a suitable adhesion, barrier or intermediate layer may be necessary.

A palladium or rhodium undercoat may also be appropriate, depending on the substrate and coating system. Suitability must be assessed for the specific application.

Gold as a Bound Cyanide Complex

In this electrolyte, the gold is present as a bound gold-cyanide complex. According to the product information, no free cyanides are present.

This distinction is important for accurate chemical description: the statement “no free cyanides” does not mean that the product contains no cyanide compounds whatsoever.

Gold Electrolyte 2 g/L – Versatile Applications

This ready-to-use gold electrolyte containing 2 g/L gold is suitable for a variety of electroplating applications.

Whether carrying out precision repair plating with a plating pen, localised or larger-area plating with a tampon, or conventional tank plating, the electrolyte is intended for compatible applications using all three methods.

2 g/L gold – bright yellow-gold deposit – for pen plating, brush plating and tank plating.
